International Relations as a Social Science

The purpose of this BISA working group is to create a forum that will allow IR scholars and other interested parties to collaborate by fostering a productive dialogue surrounding distinctive non-positivist approaches to social science within the IR community. The working group is centred on developing the scientific status of IR through a re-examination of the concept of science beyond the confines of positivism. Thus, International Relations as a Social Science aims to provide a space for developing alternative philosophies of social science to positivism and critical methodologies and it welcomes meta-theoretical debates and discussions on the history and development of the discipline of IR. Overall, the group aims to be theoretically pluralistic and receives participants from all areas of international studies who have an interest in developing the status of social scientific IR in Britain.
