BISA – C-SAP Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching International Studies (2010/2011)The British International Studies Association (BISA) and Subject Network for learning and teaching Sociology, Anthropology and Politics (C-SAP) invite and welcome nominations from BISA members for the 2010/2011 Award for Excellence in Teaching International Studies. The aim of the award is to recognise individual staff or teams of staff who have contributed to the positive learning experience of students in International Studies, to raise the profile of learning and teaching activity in International Studies in the higher education sector, and to contribute to the dissemination of best practice in teaching and learning among BISA and C-SAP members. The award winner will be decided by the BISA Learning and Teaching Sub-Committee. The award comes with a certificate, a £500 cash prize and access to funding support for travel costs to the BISA annual Conference. The winner will be announced at the BISA AGM, followed by publication on the BISA and C-SAP websites. The award will be formally presented at the BISA Annual Conference. Guidelines for submissionIndividuals and teams are invited to nominate themselves for the award. The deadline for application is 4:00pm, 8th October, 2010. A brief covering letter, nomination statements and supporting evidence should be submitted electronically to the BISA Secretary, Richard Jackson, at rsj (at) aber.ac.uk. Departments are asked to encourage and support outstanding teachers to apply for this award. For the criteria on nominations and awards, please refer in the first instance to the UK Professional Standards Framework (UK PSF) for teaching and supporting learning. This document is available on the HEA web site, here. Nominations should be accompanied by a brief covering letter, a statement of case, and supporting evidence. The Statement of Case should not exceed 2,000 words in total, and should provide explanation and evidence of any of the following: • positive contributions to learning and teaching • use of innovative teaching strategies • meeting the needs of the diverse student population • sharing of good teaching practice with colleagues • stimulating independent learning and critical thinking The committee is particularly interested to hear about innovative teaching practices and their impact on the learning experience among students of International Studies. Supporting Evidence should also be submitted to clearly demonstrate the outcomes of the good teaching practice. Such evidence may include recent formal and informal feedback from students or peer review, student testimonials, a short statement of support from a colleague, or details of relevant publications and conference papers. Supporting materials should not exceed four sides of A4. Conditions of the AwardThe award winner(s) will be expected to present a paper on their teaching innovation at the BISA Annual Conference. Award winners can apply to BISA for up to £150 additional funds to cover travel costs to attend the conference. The winner(s) agrees to write an article of at least 2,000 words to be published on the BISA and C-SAP websites summarising their award-winning teaching activities. The article must be submitted electronically to the BISA Secretary within one month of the presentation of the award. |
