Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Prize
The award recognises an individual or group that has made significant contributions to promoting a more inclusive discipline through, including but not limited to, publications, events, mentorships, public engagement, and service to BISA. This could be in relation to a range of areas, e.g. gender, disability, class, LGBTIQ+ and Black and minority racial and ethnic under-representation.
You can nominate yourself or colleagues for this award, but nominations must be made by a current member of BISA. You will need to complete the online nomination form, which includes a supporting statement of up to 300 words. The statement should detail why the nominee deserves the award by demonstrating how their contribution to international studies promotes inclusion.
BISA is committed to building a diverse, inclusive and open research environment. Our prizes are no exception and reflect our inclusive environment where diverse talent can thrive regardless of age, disability, gender, race or background. We welcome applications from individuals currently underrepresented within the discipline of International Studies.
Nominations open on Tuesday 6 January 2026 and close on Tuesday 3 February at 11.59pm (UK time). Nominations made outside of this period will not be considered.
Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion monitoring
After a nomination is submitted, nominators and nominees will be invited to complete a brief Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) monitoring form to help BISA improve the inclusivity and fairness of its prize processes; all responses will remain anonymous and will not impact prize decisions. We kindly encourage you to take a few moments to fill out the form, as your input is invaluable in supporting our commitment to equity and inclusivity.
Conditions of the award
If you win this award we’ll also ask you to write an article (500-1000 words) to be published on our website summarising your award-winning teaching activities. This article must be submitted electronically to the BISA office within one month of the presentation of the award at our annual conference. Undertaking these activities will mean that your best practice can be shared amongst other colleagues both in IR and further afield.

Past Recipients
- 2025 Joint winners Jessica Northey (Coventry University) and Andreja Zevnik, Toni Haastrup and Megan Tinsley (University of Manchester)
- 2024 Joint winners Bahar Başer (Durham University) and Vicki Squire (University of Warwick)
"Northey is an example of excellent EDI work done through leadership and mentoring and has done a number of associated initiatives e.g. creation of networks. We thought this demonstrated important ongoing work by a single researcher/teacher".
"This is an impressive application that demonstrates a career commitment to fostering inclusion in theory and practice. Professor Squire’s work and approach has made tangible impact to advance diversity and inclusion within international studies thus setting an exemplary standard for others to follow."
