Review of International Studies podcast - episode six

This article was published on

BISA journal Review of International Studies (RIS) has released the sixth episode of its new podcast.

The aim of the podcast is to foster conversations about some of the most pressing issues of our time and to facilitate reflections on the latest developments in International Relations. The podcast is hosted by Associate Professor Sebastian Kaempf (The University of Queensland), who is also an editor of the journal.

War and the moral and legal attempts to regulate it have a long history. In this episode, Dr Thomas Gregory (University of Auckland), talks to Dr Seb Kaempf, about his selection of key articles published in RIS which have tried to grapple with the phenomenon of regulating war.  Debates about the relationship between the violence inflicted on the battlefield and the restraints that are meant to limit or moderate the violence have been a recurring feature in the Review since its inception. The selected articles examine whether it is possible to restrain this violence and what restraints might be desirable, but also drawing attention to the how these restraints can sometimes work to rationalise and reinforce this violent conduct. The whole special collection is free to read until the end of February 2026.

Creating conversations across articles, identifying linkages, bringing together articles that speak to similar topics is the purpose of the RIS editor's selections, which are published every three to six months.
