Recent polling has shown that around a fifth of academics feel unable to discuss topics that have become socially or politically contested in their teaching. Significantly, this increases to a third of academics from minority ethnic backgrounds. The same polling also suggests that women academics are more likely to avoid discussing challenging/controversial topics in the classroom than men.
This online event focuses on lived experiences and practical advice on navigating issues of academic freedom in classroom spaces. In a context of ongoing global conflict and societal division, the session aims to create a space for dialogue and reflection on questions of inclusivity, safety, ethics, rights to freedom of expression, and democratic deliberation.
