Call for papers: ecocide in global politics

This in-person event is organised jointly between the BISA International Law and Politics Working Group and the British Academy Early Career Research Network.
Against the backdrop of global ecological crisis, this two-day workshop examines the growing significance of ecocide in contemporary global politics. Bringing together British Academy (BA) ECRN and International Law and Politics Working Group members from across the social sciences, it aims to explore interdisciplinary perspectives on ecocide’s conceptual, historical and philosophical foundations; the challenges and opportunities it presents for the (re)making of international law and international justice institutions; its relevance within environmental policymaking and climate activism; and its educational/pedagogical importance within the classroom.
The workshop will feature two keynote addresses by Professor Damian Short (Co-Director of the Human Rights Consortium and Professor of Human Rights and Environmental Justice at the School of Advanced Study, University of London) and Jojo Mehta (Co-founder and CEO of Stop Ecocide International).
The keynote speakers will also facilitate a roundtable discussion (Researching ecocide: strategies for a successful research career) and discussion forum (Making a difference: translating ecocide research into real impact) with participants.
As a formal network of ecocide researchers does not yet exist, it is hoped that the workshop will contribute to the establishment of such a network in the UK. To this end, the final sessions of each of the workshop’s two days will be dedicated to brainstorming sessions on the formation of an ‘Ecocide Researchers Network’.
Presentations are welcome on the following themes:
- Theorising ecocide: historical, philosophical and sociological Issues
- Ecocide and the politics of international law
- Ecocide and social change: eco-activism to environmental policymaking
- Ecocide in the classroom: pedagogies on environmental destruction.
There are 10 places available for BISA members to participate as either presenters or attendees.
