Call for papers: The risks of military AI

As AI enabled weapon and decision support systems (AI-DSS) are adopted and increasingly used for military purposes in the UK and globally, their negative ethical and political implications are becoming an ever more urgent problem. Governments have assured the public that AI systems are used within legal boundaries and downplayed the risks they pose. NGOs and campaigns, like Stop the Killer Robots, on the other hand, have pointed to fundamental issues with the integration of AI into military decision making and targeting processes. This workshop brings together academic and non-academic researchers who are interested in the risks of military AI. Topics of research may include:

  • Human-machine interaction

  • Implications for International Humanitarian Law

  • Changes in the nature of warfare

  • Processes of extraction in producing AI weapon technologies

  • Historical continuities and postcolonial implications

The half-day workshop is intended as a supportive space of exchanging ideas, networking and providing constructive feedback for on-going, critical research. Participants will be asked to circulate a short (1-2 page) draft in advance of the workshop to enable in-depth discussion of research ideas. The workshop will be held entirely online and it will be expected that all participants are present, with their video switched on, for the whole morning. Spaces are limited to a small number to allow for a constructive interaction. Research collaboration, for example in the form of co-authored papers, and potential follow-up events will be discussed as an outcome of the workshop. Academic and non-academic researchers at all stages of their career and from all backgrounds are warmly invited, including early career researchers and participants from marginalised communities.

The Workshop will take place on Tuesday 15 December from 9am-1pm.

Please send an email to note your interest in participating with a very brief overview (50-200 words) of your interest area to Elisabeth.schweiger@stir.ac.uk.
