Zoomside chat: Pleasure and depletion in contemporary militarism
Join the Gendering IR and Critical Military Studies working groups for a panel discussion of Julia Welland’s (University of Warwick) new book Pleasure and Depletion in Contemporary Militarism (2026). The book asks why so many US service members, veterans and military families continue to affectively invest in militarism when the physical and emotional costs are so high. Chaired by Sarah Bulmer (University of Exeter), she and Julia will be joined by Kate Millar (LSE), Shirin Rai (SOAS) and Chris Rossdale (University of Bristol) for what promises to be a fascinating discussion, drawing on their rich range of expertise. Register in advance to listen to our panel contributors and join in the Q&A – we look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Registration will close two hours before the event begins.
