An update from the European Journal of International Security

Our journal European Journal of International Security (EJIS) bring you their latest updates.

EJIS was proud to publish a high-quality range of articles over the last month, from analysis of the liberal international order to how Foucault can help us understand Ukraine.

What is in a word? Discourse and practice of international security in a new world by Sara Hellmüller, Fanny Badache and Bilal Salaymeh, asks how contestation of the liberal international order is changing what “international security” means. Sebastian Biba and Julia Gurol's Security provider meets security seekers: Explaining the support for China’s Global Security Initiative through role alignment, unlike most work on China’s Global Security Initiative (which focuses on Beijing’s intentions) instead asks why so many Global South states have endorsed the initiative and are now cooperating on projects under it. Matteo Mazziotti di Celso's When do armed forces support or resist domestic policing tasks? has proven the most popular of the month, and challenges the common assumption that senior military leaders resist domestic policing roles.

Ibrahim Muradov and Micah Matsuno have published a highly original piece of work with The limits of contextual resonance: Why Putin’s imperial discourse failed in Ukraine, which draws on Foucault and Gramsci to develop the concept of “contextual resonance," used to explain why Russian narratives of shared history and “one people” failed to win consent in Ukraine. Unwanted dead or alive? Gender, citizenship, and the afterlife of security in media representations of deceased ISIS members by Se Youn Park and Lou Raisonnier compares 287 media articles from Australia, the UK and France about citizens who joined ISIS and later died. The authors argue that death becomes part of counterterrorism governance, because it closes off difficult questions about repatriation, legal responsibility and reintegration.
