What does the von der Leyen II Commission hold for EU digital sovereignty?

In this first International Studies and Emerging Technologies Working Group virtual session, the new convenors, Professor Ben Farrand and Dr Mike Bourne, will introduce themselves and set the agenda for the Working Group for the academic year. As well as going into some of the plans and ambitions behind the Working Group, the second half hour will be used for Ben to give a short presentation on Ursula von der Leyen’s technology priorities for the 2024-2029 Commission, and the extent to which the overarching goal of digital sovereignty is feasible given the geopolitical headwinds Europe faces. Looking at issues such as trade, AI, and defence, the presentation will consider the extent to which there is a gap between what the Commission wants to do, and what it is capable of achieving.
